Students Find Their Voice in Perspective

By Nanfe Mira Vongman

Every great community requires a platform for its members to express themselves. At our school, that space has finally arrived. Perspective isn’t just for communication students—it’s for everyone. It’s a space where thoughts are shared, creativity flows, and our campus comes together through words. Perspective aspires to provide knowledgeable articles of opinion, creative writing, interviews with inspiring personalities, and unique takes on school activities.

I had the privilege of sitting down with Associate Professor Dr. Ayça Atay, the Chairperson of the Journalism Department in the Faculty of Communication at Near East University, and one of the key figures guiding the launch of Perspective. Her excitement was clear: “…For your knowledge to become a skill, you have to practice, and Perspective will provide a platform for students to practice and develop their skills.” She emphasized that Perspective will be student-led, with guidance from the faculty when needed, giving us the freedom to explore the issues and ideas we care about most.

Ensuring credibility and accuracy

When she was asked how the editors would ensure credibility and accuracy in reporting news, she said: “We’re going to fact-check it, and I trust the students as well.” She then went on to explain that the students would be reporters/journalists in the future, and it would all boil down to journalism ethics. She mentioned that it’s one of the courses being taught, and the importance has been well emphasized.

Dr. Atay also spoke about how Perspective plans to be inclusive of every student from all faculties and departments: “We have announcements published on the student news platform. We will work together with the Dean of Students Office and more closely with clubs.” She also added that social media would be used to reach prospective students who want to work or be featured in the newspaper.

Perspective is our opportunity to tell our own narrative. It’s more than just reading the news; it’s about developing our perspectives on the world and possibly changing how we perceive ourselves. We hope you’ll read it, participate, and grow with it.
